MFA Graduate Research Project | Roseld Laguatan, Halimaw: The Monstrous Game of Volcanic Destruction<\/h1>\n

Roseld<\/span> Laguatan <\/span>received his B.A. in Toy Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology<\/span> and a B.S. in Graphic Design\/Illustration from San Jose State University<\/span>. <\/span>Before starting his career at Crayola, he worked as an Artist for Hallmark Cards, a Freelance Illustrator, and a Product Designer at <\/span>LeapFrog<\/span>. He also worked as a Freelance Toy Designer for toy companies including Fisher Price, Disney,<\/span> and <\/span>Spin Master<\/span>.<\/span> Roseld is a <\/span>Principal Product Designer working on Crayola\u2019s <\/span>Scribble <\/span>Scrubbie<\/span> t<\/span>oy<\/span> line <\/span>and <\/span>Crayola Experience product lines<\/span>.<\/span> In his past time, he enjoys collecting die-cast Japanese robots of the <\/span>\u201970s and \u201980s<\/span>, going to <\/span>comic and toy shows<\/span>, and <\/span>watching anime<\/span>.<\/span><\/h3>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”4670″ img_size=”medium” alignment=”center” css_animation=”fadeIn” css=””][vc_column_text css=””]Inspired by my exploration of Philippine folklore and mythology, my thesis project introduces the captivating world of Filipino mythological beings known as Halimaw\u2014a Tagalog word meaning \u201cmonster.\u201d These legendary creatures, drawn from traditional stories and ancestral beliefs, are brought to life through an action-packed and immersive board game experience titled Halimaw<\/span>: The Monstrous Game of Volcanic Destruction.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the heart of this project is the goal to celebrate and share aspects of Filipino culture through dynamic gameplay, engaging battles, and richly illustrated creature designs. Players are transported into an imaginative world where learning elements of the Filipino language can help them progress further in the game.<\/p>\n

By blending traditional board game mechanics with innovative design and culturally rooted content, this project aims to bridge the gap between past and present\u2014making the mythological Halimaw relevant to today\u2019s players. Boys and Girls Club of America Posters:<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n

This project from the Design Pioneer course was inspired by Dick Bruna, known for his bold, simple style and advocacy for children through organizations like UNICEF and Amnesty International. Drawing from his expressive line work and bright colors, I created a series of health and safety posters for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America to communicate clear, kid-friendly messages.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Memoz is a whimsical line of school and desk supplies designed to make schoolwork more fun and inspiring, featuring playful items like a carousel tape dispenser, a swing set pen holder, and a rocket ship pencil case. Each piece comes to life with adorable collectible characters that double as stampers, helping students stay engaged, organized, and productive.<\/div>\n

Magnetic Puzzle Postcards:<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n
Created for the Unconventional Typography course, this project reimagines the traditional postcard by combining it with a souvenir in the form of a magnetic type puzzle. Each postcard features removable typographic pieces that, when arranged on the included base, form the shape of a famous landmark from the sender’s country.<\/div>\n
